Strength Training
Uploading ....
Strength training is the practice of using resistance to increase muscle strength and often muscle mass. The term is used interchangeably with resistance training, although experts may disagree that they are the same thing.
Strength training can also be known as body building, weight training and body sculpture. There are probably as many terms for this hugely popular activity/lifestyle as there are muscle building exercises. Opinions on the best way to build strength and muscle are just as common and no one opinion is the authority, although some have more relevance and carry more weight (no pun intended) than others.
There are exercises designed to increase strength for every different sport under the sun. You’ll be able to find strength training exercises for baseball, football, running (short and long distance), rugby, you name it, there will be specific resistance training methods involved. Professional athletes need to be their best and often that means, their strongest.
Increased muscle strength and mass help the body maintain an optimum weight by contracting and the relaxing, burning off calories in the meantime. Of course it’s not enough to just have big, strong muscles to be lean, but it can be a contributing factor. When our bodies have finished growing we start losing muscle mass so it’s important not only for maintaining a reasonable weight, but for health and certainly vanity purposes too. Consistent muscle building also helps keep bones and tendons strong and healthy.
What may seem an absolutely simple process is actually rather complex. To properly, and, very importantly, safely build strength and mass you need to know exactly:
Which muscles you are going to target
What goal you have in mind – eg get bigger muscles, simply improve strength or tone the muscle area, removing fat
These factors will determine
The exercises you do
The amount of repetitions you will carry out
The intensity of the workout
The rest period between sets/exercises
Now, you won’t turn into a young Arnie by simply lifting a few weights.
There are a few things that you might not have immediately considered.
Your diet – Anyone who is truly fit/buff/ripped etc will have developed some sort of eating plan that suits their particular goals. These people who look like professional athletes and say ‘I just eat anything I like’ are probably not telling the truth. High protein, low carbohydrate diets are common, but something tailored to your specific needs is probably best. Possibly you can choose a 6 pack abs diet.
Your lifestyle – It’s hard to maintain fitness and concentrate on a routine of strength training if you are out with your buddies every night, drinking beer into the early hours, missing out on vital sleep. A lifestyle of moderate partying might unfortunately be in order.
Dedication and Motivation – Maybe the most important thing anyone will ever need to be concerned about. If you watched, say, 300, and thought, ‘right, that’s the look for me’ and want to develop strong muscles just on a whim, you may not be pleased to note that bodybuilding is for life. You build big muscles, you’ll want to maintain them. Achieving that goal of a Spartan body requires immense dedication and your mind will need to be as strong as your body to keep motivated. Nothing will happen overnight.
Thankfully if you manage to overcome the hurdle that is the ‘hard work’ part of body sculpture, you’ll start to appreciate how moreish this lifestyle can be.
There is an incredible worldwide community of people who share information and best practice. And once you start to see the effect that your hard work is having…
Added respect from others
More attention from the opposite sex
Not to mention the health benefits and positive direction that such a lifestyle drives you towards.
Strength training can be a confidence game changer, an intense hobby or simply your life’s work.
